What Is a Kuker? The Spirit Behind the Mask

A kuker (plural: kukeri) is a participant in an ancient pagan ritual with Thracian roots, practiced in Bulgaria and across the broader Balkan region. Kukeri wear elaborate, handcrafted costumes made of animal fur and big bells, along with large, intimidating wooden masks with horns. Through their traditional dances, they aim to drive away evil spirits and welcome the new beginning of the year, bringing good health and a rich harvest.

PERFORMANCE

The Bulgarian Ensemble at Carnival of Cultures

At its 30th anniversary, the Carnival of Cultures in Berlin, one of Europe’s most vibrant and colorful celebrations, welcomed Bulgaria in full spirit and tradition. At the heart of the Bulgarian group was a Survakari ensemble from the town of Batanovtsi in the Pernik region. With five authentic costumes and the powerful presence of young men who have lived this tradition since childhood, they brought the ancient ritual to life, filling the streets with rhythm, energy, and the timeless spirit of Kukeri.

Through masks and rhythm, we spark new beginnings. Berlin-based since 2020.
